Illwald Forest conceals a beautiful ecosystem with exceptional wildlife. Ilwald's name comes from its German name, the "forest of Ill". This natural reserve came into being 13 March 1995. It is meant to protect the humid centre of central Alsace, which floods every year.
It houses 1500 hectares of vegetation that is able to grow because of the abundance of water. You can explore its biological richness through a number of the landscaped walking trails. Discover the many herbaceous plants and the wild deer. Illwald is the only forest in France that has so many deer in total liberty.
9 kilometres away from this biological wealth, at the foot of Haut-Koenigsbourg, is the wine route. The Rhineland Forest is on the other side of it. Explore Monkey Mountain, the eagle hunting ground, the cities of Strasbourg and Colmar, and the Automobile and Railway Museums in Mulhouse.
