Heritage and culture

Sélestat: With the Humanist Library, the historic centre, the Church of Sainte-Foy and the Bread Museum, there are many different places to visit in Sélestat. Plenty to delight young and old alike.

Colmar: Just 30 minutes from Hotel L'Illwald, explore the old town as you make your way along its cobbled streets filled with flowers. In the summer and winter, you will enjoy visiting the medieval town centre with its half-timbering houses, discovering the Gothic church of Saint-Martin (13th century), the Unterlinden Museum and the famous Christmas Market.

Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle: Travel back through nine centuries of history and imagine yourself inside this imposing castle, a great example of a mountain fortress in Alsace. An experience that is historic, architectural and educational!

Typical Alsatian villages in the Haut-Rhin: Stroll through the narrow streets of these picturesque villages and admire the half-timbered houses and medieval shop fronts. Throughout the year, at Christmas and Easter, many activities and events are organised in Eguisheim, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé and Kaysersberg.

Gastronomy and wine tourism

Alsace wine route: The Hotel L’Illwald is located near one of the 6 wine routes. On the programme: magnificent vineyard landscapes that follow the rhythm of the seasons, visits to some 1,000 wine-makers, walks through famous wine towns and wine tasting for a great experience exploring the lands of Riesling and Gewurztraminer.  To be enjoyed on foot, by bike and even on horseback.

Christmas markets: For centuries, Advent in Alsace has been synonymous with Christmas markets. Throughout December, in a festive Christmas atmosphere, towns and villages organise their traditional markets where you can find many essential items such as gingerbread served with mulled wine, bredele and mannele. The first written reference to a Christmas tree was found in Sélestat in 1521.

Leisure activities 

Montagne des Singes (monkey park): 200 Barbary macaques to observe in the huge park with guided tours and workshops. Great family fun near Kintzheim.

Volerie des Aigles (birds of prey park): Come and admire some of the world's most beautiful birds of prey in the skies above Kintzheim Castle during the open-air shows. The Bas-Rhin animal park is a wonderful destination for your family holidays in Alsace. 

Cigoland attraction and leisure park: rides of all kinds, water games and a host of attractions surrounded by white storks. This park, designed for young and old alike, is a fun and educational way to explore the specific treasures and ecosystems of Alsace.

Europapark: theme park on the German side of the border, 35 minutes from the Hotel L'Illwald.
